01    Nature

At dusk, we walk through sprawling jasmine, bubble-gum pink oleander, and olive trees. We also walk as far as possible from the neighbor with two pit bulls.

02    Object (old)

Photographs of my mom in Saigon during the 1960s.

03    Object (new)

A sculpture from Sean Brian McDonald – a stack of pale pink slabs

04    Surprise

An estimate from Lufthansa for a round-trip flight from San Francisco to Paris: $16,000 for two seats in Economy.

05    Encounter

A 45 minute conversation with Mr. E. on the way to Dulles Airport:
E. is originally from Addis Ababa, but moved to Amsterdam at 18 on scholarship.
He eventually married, had a son, and worked as an accountant in Amsterdam for 25 years. He recently moved to Washington DC to be with his fiancé, a financial consultant.
We both agree that Geert Wilders should be banned from politics.

06    Night Out

Observation:
8:30 pm. Valencia Street, San Francisco.
A slender man on rollerblades whizzed by wearing a skintight tiger-print bodysuit with three claw-shaped slashes across his bottom. Meow.

07    Day Out

Observation:
12:00 pm. 20th Street, San Francisco.
Fidel “Castro”, the neighbor who lives above the store, takes his walk. He is charming and 86 years old. Today he is wearing a plaid fedora and tan coat. He takes slow, deliberate steps, and shuffles down the street with cane in hand. He reminds me how important it is to live life to the fullest.

08    Time Alone

During quiet moments, I think about my grandfather. He was a film director, had a heavy Boston accent, and taught me non-P.C. jokes in Yiddish. My grandfather's favorite meal: Matzah ball soup and McDonalds Filet-O-Fish sandwiches stuffed with homegrown beefsteak tomatoes.

09    Time With A Friend

S. and I sat on a bench facing a non-descript parking lot. We both have a cup of coffee in hand. The sun shines on our faces and we tell stories about our old days in Baltimore. I wouldn't want to sit anywhere else.

010    Movie / TV / Book

Books:
"Giappone 1970" by Carlo Mollino
"The Dream of The Audience: Theresa Hak Kyung Cha"
Cha was a Korean American artist who specialized in performance/video art and paper works.
"Grandfather's Envelopes: Works of Paper" by Fujii Sakuko.
I received this book as a gift from Koko, a very dear friend. The book features a collection of envelopes handcrafted by Fujii's grandfather over a 15-year period.
