01    Object (new): a new object that held significance

A tin cicada. My husband gifted this to me on my birthday on August 26th. I’ve always gravitated toward cicadas ; I record them wherever I am whenever I hear them. He did some research and found that they signify new beginnings, transformation...

02    Object (old): an old object that took on new/different kind of meaning

A cotton scarf I had bought on a trip to Florence at Pucci back in the early 90s... I had only ever worn it around my neck and hadn’t pulled it out in ages. Somehow the bright colors of it attracted my eye as I was packing for this trip, and I actually wore it all the time on my extremely wild and salty hair.

03    Utility: describe an occasion when you felt useful.

I was the trip translator since I studied modern Greek in college. Also was on a boat quite a bit and helped as one does.

04    Story: What’s the best story you heard?

Tales of gall bladder cleanses that changed lives.

05    Nature: An encounter with the natural world

I was on a hike with my husband on the island of Milos, in an area that is an ancient site but completely open to anyone. We came upon a Milos Viper — it was lying in the path — and only when we got back did we learn how rare and how deadly they are.

06    Minor secrets: Describe something you did in secret.

I went alone to the open upper deck of an inter-island ferry. It was so windy it was literally blowing me over. I stayed anyway and had a good cry.

07    Proportion: A specific moment that reminded you of the scale of the universe; that you are part of a greater whole.

We took a boat to some caves on our trip in Greece, and swam through them. Everyone else had a mask and were swimming much faster than I was, so I was left on my own. At one point I was swimming through this tunnel, which really looked and felt — with its narrow walls that I could just barely swim through — like a birth canal. This month in particular with everything going on in my personal and work life, was a rebirth moment for sure.

08    Culture: A list of front-burner interests from the last month
